It’s Opening Day

The 2008 Opener Features a Rematch of the 2007 Finale

At around 4:30 PM today, a Mark Hendrickson fastball should rip (or sputter) through the south Florida spring air and kick off the 2008 Florida Marlins’ season against Jose Reyes, Johan Santana and the rest of the New York Mets.

For baseball fans, this time of year is special. For a brief time the haves and have nots are on the same page, the young and old equally fresh and the playing field seems a bit more level. The chalk is whiter, the grass is greener and the mitt pops a little more.

Baseball will be back; South Florida’s boys of summer are returning to the field for the first time since playing the role of spoiler against the Mets in what was the exciting end to a widely disappointing 2007 season. 2008 marks the first time in 8 seasons the Marlins are coming off a last place finish in the National League East and there doesn’t appear to be tremendous hope that feat will be averted in 2008. The nucleus of talent the Marlins have assembled is somewhat promising, somewhat raw and almost certain to frustrate the small faithful following the team has.

So before Hanley Ramirez steps in to be the first National League hitter to welcome Johan Santana to the league, just remember that today is what being a baseball fan is all about.

You go into the season with 60 wins and 60 losses guaranteed it's the remaining 40 (2) that are determined during the season.

Ya I have class at 5:15 but there is no way I'm missing the game. That, and unless I fail the final I should have an A.

Wow....just saw...$21 million payrolll.....next lowest is 42 mill.

We've had the lowest payroll for a few years in the past decade, I dunno why that's so surprising.

That, and unless I fail the final I should have an A. __________________ Things to do before I die: 9) Write a novel about the ongoing carpenter ant/fire ant civil war 7) Become President of the United States and CNN anchor, simultaneously 6) Return the $428 in monopoly money that I stole from my childhood friend. 4) Swim in the arctic ocean with a permeable loincloth 3) Discover what really happened to The Giving Tree 2) Bust a load on Sienna Miller's bathroom window (from the outside) 1) Repossess all my missing socks from boarding school.
