Default 2008 NFL: Week 9

TAMPA – We may have seen the last of Jermaine Phillips as a Buccaneer.

Phillips, who could miss the rest of the season with a left forearm injury suffered in the loss at Dallas, was scheduled to become a free agent after this season but the Bucs have made no real efforts to re-sign him.

Their plan, it seemed, was to let Sabby Piscitelli take over as the starter at his spot beginning next season. That plan will instead be enacted now and if Piscitelli plays well he’ll almost certainly keep the job.

Ironically, the thing the Bucs probably worry most about with Piscitelli in at SS is injury. Since coming to the league last year Piscitelli has had a hard time avoiding injuries and staying on the field.

That was a problem for Phillips, too, of course. He’s such a hard hitter that he often took the worst of his hits himself. In fact, his left forearm injury is the second such injury he’s suffered in the last few years.

Phillips broke his right forearm during a Week 10 game at Atlanta in 2004. He wound up missing the rest of that season and nearly lost his job a couple years later as a result.

After breaking his arm Phillips became so concerned about injuries that he toned his game down in 2005 and 2006. He was so ineffective, though, that the Bucs drafted Piscitelli to push him to be better, which he clearly did.

In 2007 Phillips went back to playing the all-out physical style that made him a starter in the first place and the result was one of the best seasons ever for a Bucs safety.

Phillips was playing at the same high level this year but this injury be enough for the Bucs to pass on the opportunity to re-sign him.

The NFL provides a hotline for players to contact if they want to find out if supplements contain ingredients banned by the league. However, Minnesota Vikings receiver Bernard Berrian said sometimes there's nobody at the other end of the line.

In an interview with Sirius satellite radio, Berrian said he had tried twice to call the hotline and never got a call back, before getting a reply on his third attempt.

In an e-mail to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league would "follow up" on Berrian's comments to make sure the hotline is operating properly.

"You've got to take some responsibility and call into that hotline [to inquire about the legality of certain products]," Berrian said. "But I know one thing about that hotline. I've called twice before and actually never gotten ahold of anybody sometimes. So even when you try to do the right thing sometimes it is still hard to get ahold of somebody and really find out what you're really taking."

Good job NFL.

You can't make money by helping the players out. The NFL was probably too busy deciding whether to make Huggies or Luvs the official diapers of the illegitimate children of NFL players.

"At halftime of that game, Singletary called for the attention of his players. He then dropped his pants, turned around and pointed to his backside. He used this occasion and that visual to describe what happened to his team in the first half.

A NFL source inside the room confirmed the story with my radio partner, XTRA 910 football guru Mike Jurecki, and added that Singletary then addressed the team for 3-4 minutes with his pants around his ankles."

49ers coach Mike Singletary has made quite an impact on the NFL in a very short time.

In only one game, he delivered a memorable postgame press conference and a fiery postgame speech to his team, and he sent a star player to the showers during the game.

Singletary now admits that, during halftime of the same, he dropped his pants while speaking to the team.

Word of the incident surfaced on Wednesday. We posted an item about it earlier today.

Subsequently, Singletary issued the following statement: “I used my pants to illustrate that we were getting our tails whipped on Sunday and how humiliating that should feel for all of us. I needed to do something to dramatize my point; there were other ways I could have done it but I think this got the message across.”

Hmmm.

“Hey, Coach just dropped his pants. Wow, he’s got some skinny legs for a former player. Why did he do that again? Oh, yeah. We suck.”

Asked whether Singletary was embarrassed by the incident, team P.R. director Aaron Salkin said, “There are other ways he could’ve done it. He knows that.”

Based on the report on ESPN.com, it appears that Singletary didn’t actually moon the team. The initial reports seemed to suggest that Singletary had shown the players his (Tom) Bare-asso.

Regardless of whether the players got a look at Singletary’s naked butt and rectum, we’ve got a feeling that this entire experiment isn’t going to work. We just don’t think that this is the way to motivate grown men.

More importantly, we think the bigger issue is whether Singletary has the stuff to get his players prepared to play. Even if the players are as motivated as they can possibly be, the coaching staff needs to work hard (and work smart) in getting the players in position to make plays and win games.

Based on the fact that the 49ers were blown away by a previously 1-5 team using a backup quarterback, we’re not ready to declare that Mike Singletary is a master of breaking down game film and putting together game plans and then communicating the strategy effectively to the players.

And we have a feeling that next week’s performance against the Cardinals won’t change our minds.
LOL

Well, first the usual thing where we give up everything any team wants on a first drive
And then Earnest Graham fumbled on our first offensive play
And then our defense still sucked
