In a recent interview with an Atlanta radio station, linebacker Terrell Suggs said twice that Troy Smith should be the Ravens' starting quarterback over Joe Flacco.

"Right now, I think [Flacco is] all right," Suggs told 2 Live Stews, a nationally syndicated radio show that is not aired in Baltimore. "But like I said, in the end, Troy should be the starter [because he's] the better man for the job."

Smith, the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner at Ohio State, was considered the front-runner for the starting job in the preseason before he missed several weeks of practice with a tonsil infection. He was the Ravens' No. 2 quarterback for the first time Sunday.

Flacco, the Ravens' first-round pick this year, has completed 64.1 percent of his passes, throwing for two touchdowns and seven interceptions. Coach John Harbaugh recently named Flacco the starting quarterback for the rest of the season.

"He started out hot," Suggs told 2 Live Stews. "We played two teams who were in the bottom of the league in defense [the Browns and Bengals]. So, everybody was going all crazy about him."

He backtracked a little bit afterwords, but he said what he said.

Ravens Have a Bounty on Hines Ward?

JJ Cooper

Hines Ward found out on Tuesday that he won't be fined for his hit that ended Keith Rivers' season. He also found out that the Ravens have put a bounty on him when the two teams face off in December.

According to Pro Football Talk on the 2 Live Stews radio show, linebacker Terrell Suggs said that the Ravens have put a bounty on knocking out Ward. The bounty was on Ward for the team's first meeting earlier this year, but Ward made it through that game unscathed. Actually Bart Scott had told Ward he was going to kill him during that game in revenge for Ward's legal hit on Scott in 2007, but Ward put Scott on his butt again.

Ward has always managed to avoid the big hit while making plenty of big blocks. But since Suggs was nice enough to make the bounty public, he'll ensure that referees are well aware of any cheap shots at Ward in December. Having the bounty is one thing, but being dumb enough to announce it is sure to have the NFL watching Suggs and the Ravens defense closely.

How many times have players said they were going to go after Ward and nothing happens?

*shrug*

I just find it funny that Scott seems to get embarrassed every time he calls out Ward.

btw, it probably goes without saying, but Hines Ward is probably my favorite player in the NFL... Big Ben 2nd and Polamalu tied for 3rd with Champ Bailey

Those are my top 3 most hated without the Champ Bailey tie.

And it's for obvious reasons, I'm not going to pretend I have some cool reason to hate them.

I can respect the honesty... surprisingly, no Bengal is on my top 3 hated list... though the recently mentioned Bart Scott just jumped up to the number 2 spot...

Rodney Harrison
Bart Scott
Roy Williams (The safety)

Report: McAllister, Smith violated steroids policy

By BRETT MARTEL, AP Sports Writer 42 minutes ago

New Orleans Saints veterans Deuce McAllister and Will Smith reportedly are among several players who have violated the NFL steroids policy.

Fox 31 television in Denver, citing an unnamed source, reported Friday there are between six and 10 positive tests in the NFL for a weight-loss diuretic. The only names the station mentioned were the two Saints, who are in London for Sunday’s game with the San Diego Chargers.

ESPN.com, citing two unnamed sources, reported the number is more than 10 and may exceed 15.

The NFL would not comment on the reports, but attorney David Cornwell told The Associated Press he has been hired to handle the appeals of a number of players who are facing possible suspensions.

Cornwell declined to identify any of his clients or say how many there were.

“These men are entitled to confidentiality and entitled to go through appeal process, so the (Fox 31) report … is completely unfair,” Cornwell said. “The cornerstone of any workplace testing program, especially one in professional sports with high-profile people, is confidentiality.

“The recent reports about pending appeals by players who are alleged to have used weight loss supplements reflect the most egregious violation of the NFL steroid policy. The foundation of the policy is both a player’s right to appeal and an absolute right to confidentiality. By leaking this story, the ‘source’ is clearly attempting to put their thumb on the scale of justice and harm these men.”

Saints spokesman Greg Bensel, who was with the team in London, said drug testing is a league matter and the team would have no immediate comment.

Phone messages left with defensive end Smith’s agent, Joel Segal, and running back McAllster’s agent, Jim Steiner, were not returned.

According to the NFL’s policy, the first positive test results in a four-game suspension.

In August, Jets running back Jesse Chatman was suspended for four games for violating the league’s drug policy. He said he tested for a diuretic— “something I never even heard of”—that could be used as a masking agent.

When used as a masking agent a diuretic dilutes the urine, which results in lower levels of the banned substance being excreted from the body. That can make it more difficult to detect banned substances.

The Fox 31 report said three or four of the positive tests belonged to the Saints, and that McAllister and Smith tested positive for Bumetanide.

A “water pill,” Bumetanide decreases the amount of water retained in the body by increasing urination. It causes the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer is unlikely to play another game in the 2008 season but he will delay a decision on whether to have surgery to repair a "frayed" ligament in his right throwing elbow, sources told ESPN.

Palmer's injury is to one portion of the ulnar collateral ligament and he has been told that Tommy John surgery would repair the problem with positive results, the sources said. However, doctors have agreed that Palmer's conservative approach to such an operation is acceptable because the damage is more limited than what Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme suffered a year ago when he had the surgery.

Despite the Bengals' 0-7 record going into a bye weekend, the team has no plans to place Palmer on injured reserve, which would officially end his season. Palmer has asked the Bengals to wait "around two months" before taking any action because, a source said, the quarterback "does not want to abandon the team until he's certain he can't play ...the win-loss record has nothing to do with it, believe it or not."

Neither the Bengals nor Palmer have a comment about the specifics of the injury and the plan.

Palmer has visited five specialists who have concluded the quarterback has a worrisome injury. The ulnar collateral ligament is a thick triangular band and sources say only one of the three portions of the ligament is frayed.

Palmer believes the pain in his arm is actually manageable but he has lost strength in his right hand, which has become a greater obstacle to throwing the football, the sources said.
ESPN - Sources: Bengals' Palmer likely won't return in 2008, but is delaying surgery - NFL
