Default US World Cup Qualifying Discussion | Next Game: 2/11 vs Mexico | 0 pts (T-1st)

The United States begins its quest for qualification for South Africa 2010 when they host Barbados in Carson, California Sunday afternoon.

The game is the first of a two-game home-and-home playoff with aggregate goals determining which team advances to the first CONCACAF group qualifying stage. The second leg of the series will take place next Sunday in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Landon Donovan will be expected once again to captain the team as he has now become just the eleventh American international to reach the one hundred cap mark.
Donovan has been outstanding for the Los Angeles Galaxy this season and the 'Nats will be hoping that he can translate the success from his club team performances over to his National team performances.

Bob Bradley's men should head into the game full of confidence after a hard-fought 0-0 tie against world number one Argentina at Giants Stadium last weekend. Tim Howard was certainly America's best player against the Albeceleste and Bradley is depending on a similar performance from the Everton man in order to vanquish Barbados.

Barbados has never qualified for a major soccer competition and therefore will be viewed as significant underdogs when they go head-to-head with The United States. The Bajans best World Cup qualification effort came in 2002 when they were able to reach the semifinal round of CONCACAF qualifying.

America and Barbados have only met twice in their entire soccer history, with the Americans delivering heavy defeats to their Caribbean counterparts on both occasions. Both matchups took place during qualification for the 2002 World Cup and saw the United States win 7-0 in Foxborough, Massachusetts and 4-0 in Barbados.

If the United States is able to defeat the Bajans they are likely to face Guatemala, Trinidad & Tobago, and Cuba in their CONCACAF semifinal round group phase.
Yanks-Abroad Preview

Guess that's a yes on the Landon question.

Mastroeni puts one in for a 3-0 lead in the 20th minute and his first international goal

Goal goes to Ching as it deflected off of him, assist to Mastroeni. Still 3-0.

Mastroeni is out of the game with an apparent injury in the 26th minute, Freddy Adu in to replace him.

Two subs left.

UPDATE: Mastroeni has a left glut strain. AKA: Sore ass.

Donovan picked up the 4th goal on a free kick, while Dempsey just nets the 5th goal (and his second of the game) in the 63rd minute.

Eddie Johnson comes in for Donovan in 81st minute, and then scores off a header in the 83rd minute. 6-0 good guys.

I also just realized that Barbados is abbreviated BRB. That kind of describes their defensive style.

Make that 7, Ching's second goal.

The 7th goal was changed to an auto gol, so Ching turns around and gets goal #8.

The US defeated Barbados 1-0 this past Sunday and moved on to the next stage of qualifying. Because it's fun (and I have a little while to kill), this is how it's gone from the very beginning.

Thirty five teams will compete for 3 allocated World Cup bids and 1 playoff spot against the 5th team from CONMEBOL (South America). Last World Cup, CONCACAF as a region secured four bids (the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Trinidad). All time, Mexico has qualified the most from this region (13 times), followed by the US (8), Costa Rica (3), El Salvador (2; none since 1982), and six teams at one a piece. The United States currently holds the longest streak of qualifications, having made the finals five straight times dating back to 1990 in Italy.

Thirty Five teams were placed into six pots based on the FIFA world rankings (in order of ranking):

Pot A:(bye to second round; top seeds of third round groups)
Mexico
The United States of America
Costa Rica

Pot B: (bye to second round; 2 seeds of third round groups)
Honduras
Panama
Trinidad and Tobago

Pot C: (bye to second round; were protected from facing 1 and 2 seeds in said round)
Jamaica
Cuba
Haiti
Guatemala
Canada
Guyana

Pot D: (bye to second round)
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Pot E:
Barbados
Suriname
Bermuda
Antigua and Barbuda
Saint Kitts and Nevis
The Dominican Republic
El Salvador
The Bahamas
Nicaragua
Grenada
Saint Lucia

Pot F:
Turks and Caicos Islands
The Netherlands Antilles
The British Virgin Islands
Dominica
The Cayman Islands
Puerto Rico
Anguilla
Belize
The US Virgin Islands
Montserrat
Aruba

Round 1
In the first round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying, the teams from Pot E were drawn against those from Pot F and faced off in the typical home/home two game series, with the exception of three games (DR-PR, Virgin Islands-Grenada, Suriname-Montserrat) that only played one game because the team listed first did not have a stadium that met FIFA regulations. Most aggregate goals advanced. Scores given are aggregate totals.

Code:
Group 1 Dominica 1-2 Barbados Turks and Caicos 2-3 Saint Lucia Bermuda 4-2 Cayman Islands Aruba 0-4 Antigua Group 2 Belize 4-2 Saint Kitts Bahamas* 3-3 British Virgin Islands Dominican Republic 0-1 Puerto Rico** Group 3 US Virgin Islands 0-10 Grenada Suriname 7-1 Montserrat El Salvador 16-0 Anguilla Nicaragua 0-3 Netherland Antilles

*- winning team advanced on away goal differential
**- winning team scored their advancing goal in extra time

Second Round
In the second round, teams receiving the bye (Pots A-C) were randomly drawn against the winners of Round One (along with Saint Vincent). Teams played the traditional home/home two game series, with most aggregate goals advancing to Round Three. Three games were moved from their sites due to stadiums not meeting FIFA rules: Saint Lucia's home game (played in the US), Belize's home game (played in the US), and The Bahamas' home game (played in Jamaica).

Code:
Group 1 The United States 9-0 Barbados Guatemala 9-1 Saint Lucia Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 Bermuda Antigua and Barbuda 3-8 Cuba Group 2 Belize 0-9 Mexico Jamaica 13-0 The Bahamas Honduras 6-2 Puerto Rico Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 1-7 Canada Group 3 Grenada
