Default Leagues Getting What Leagues Want

Friend casually mentioned this to me over the weekend that this past year pretty much every sport is getting its ideal match up for its championship as far as potential viewership, fan interest, media attention, etc.

Ranked in order of most wanted to least:

1. Super Bowl: New England Patriots VS. New York Giants

The team going for perfection which was also obviously the most talked about, controversial, and watched team all year versus the team in the biggest market and a rematch of an epic Week 17 contest. Dream for the NFL.

2. NBA Finals: Boston Celtics VS. Los Angeles Lakers

The top two seeds with numerous stars. Lakers are a huge market and possibly the most known and followed team in the league and Boston was the story coming in to this season. KG looking for his first ring and Kobe looking for his first Shaqless one. Media gets to act like the Laker-Celtics rivalry is burning as much as it was in the 80s even though it isn't.

3. Stanley Cup Finals: Detroit Red Wings VS. Pittsburgh Penguins

One of the must succesful and recognizable teams ever, the Red Wings versus the team with the most star power and face and future of the NHL in Pittsburgh with Sidney Crosby. Old versus New. Experience versus Youth. Yada yada.

4. World Series: Boston Red Sox VS. Colorado Rockies

This is a stretch of sorts and easily the weakest on the list but baseball did get its choice of the AL (yes, supplanting the Yankees) but got the weakest pick of the litter in the NL with the Rockies. Blow softened by the Rockies ridiculous hot streak from the regular season to the summit.

Random, but I just thought it was interesting for as many times as leagues lament in the playoffs over potential matchups 2007/2008 has been devoid of the Piston/Spurs and White Sox/Astros series everyone adores.

If you had put "Yada vs. Yada" at the end of the the NFL one I would've blown you.
