BTW I still find it hard to believe Salty can be had for Olsen as the centerpiece.

So did our catcher.

And we'd manage to be picking up a C that makes Baker the better defender of the duo, which is scary.

And, yeah, I don't get why Cleveland would part with Shoppach, but it's being bandied about.

Exactly. Salty's career MLB line hits RHP over 100 OPS points higher (difference was Salty about 40 points higher in 2008). Shoppach just murders lefties. Either of them would make me beyond happy, but I'd rather have Salty as he is 5 years younger and can hit most of the league's pitching a lot better already. He will pan out. I also think it will be harder to get Shoppach, while it may be realistic to churn out a Salty or M. Ramirez package with Olsen and someone else.

hehe, can we declare coghlin the winner of the 2010 2b competition right now?

and why are so many people convinced that mcpherson is able to succeed in the majors? he did hit a boatload of homers last year, but that was in new mexico in a hitters league. that doesn't necessarily translate to success in dolphin stadium. not saying he wont kick ass, and i hope very much that he does succeed, but he strikes me as a slightly worse mike jacobs. also, gaby sanchez might pan out at 1st base, but some scouts are saying that he only projects as a platoon player... no real 30 hr potential there. if he's a bust and dmac cant hit at normal altitudes, then we might be thin at the corners this year. i remember we didnt do so well last year when we had wes starting at third and cantu at first for an extended period, helms really isnt an everyday player.

I'm not sold on McPherson either, but you have to like the fact that to fill 3B and 1B we've got no less than 4 candidates (Helms, McPherson, Cantu, Gaby).

I think Jacobs' production is terribly unappreciated given our ballpark and his slugging ability, but you can't say that we're putting ourselves in a tough position given the sheer volume of players we have waiting in the wings.

Royals’ new slugger isn’t looking to walk
Al Messerschmidt

New Royals slugger Mike Jacobs reiterated on the Royals’ Web site in the last few days something he told us shortly after he was acquired — that he’d much rather swing away than take a walk, or so it seems.

Jacobs walked just 36 times last season and had a .299 on-base percentage.

“I don’t walk a lot,” Jacobs said. “I believe that when you’re in the middle of the lineup, you’re in the middle of the lineup for a reason — to drive in runs and put the ball in play and try to do damage.”

Walks? Who needs stinkin’ walks?

Hmmm. Wonder if Trey Hillman will agree next spring.

Jacobs did go on to say, “I think I can truly be a .275, .280 hitter in the big leagues. And if I’m hitting .280 or .270 in the big leagues, my on-base percentage is going to be around .320.”

Glad to see a change of scenery hasn't changed his perspective
