![]() The Marlins continued tweaking their 40-man roster, outrighting outfielder Alejandro De Aza and relievers Henry Owens, Lee Gardner and Doug Waechter to Triple A New Orleans. That leaves the Marlins with 38 players on the 40-man. De Aza (ankle) and Owens (shoulder) spent the entire season on the disabled list while Gardner (right elbow) was on the DL from mid-April on. In another transaction, minor-league pitcher Scott Nestor was claimed off waivers by the Phillies. Fish Bytes Marlins sent RHP Doug Waechter outright to Triple-A New Orleans. Waechter, who would have been eligible for arbitration, gets bumped from the roster despite finishing with a 3.69 ERA in 63 1/3 innings. If he had been claimed off waivers, he probably would have been in line for about $1 million next year. Apparently, no team thought he was worth that much. He'll become a free agent. Salary figure is pretty wrong, comps easily show him in the $600ish range, but he's gone. Arbitration cases dropping by the day.

Damn, I thought Waechter could have been a valuable guy in our pen next year. But I guess $1 is too much to pay for a long reliever. Decent run as a Marlin. He won't have any trouble finding work.

real surprised no team took a flyer on him.
A 27 year old puts up a 113 ERA+, only 50 inn but no outrageous BABIP (.284). Not a good BB/K but still. The guy could start again next year, he's still young, and at only 600k, why not take a flyer? oh well. (And for those that don't know, even though he was outrighted to AAA, he will be a minor league FA...so, in essence, we non-tendered him but did him a favor by putting him on waivers to give him the ability to be up for arbitration on some team)

De Aza, Gardner, and Owens were also outrighted to AAA. Gardner is a Minor league FA, and he'd have only been making the minimum next year, so that's surprising and, imo, not smart. Owens and De Aza will not be minor league FAs, but they are also no longer on the 40 man roster. Owens injury most have been real serious if we waived him instead of optioned him....then again I also love his milb numbers and if they translate well, I think he could dominate.
Scott Nestor was also claimed off waivers by Philly. For those that don't remember, we were offering Nestor to the Phillies for Helms before. http://miamiherald.typepad.com/fish_...s-outrigh.html Last edited by JJ; October 1st, 2008 at 07:00 PM.. |

it's true
lol? Could that signal the end for Cantu? Or maybe Gaby? I mean, both of those guys have more trade value than Dallas so I'd assume they would be the ones moves (And Gaby was on the list that we gave Pitt of available guys during the Manny trade). At that point then you have Dallas/Helms platoon at third and then Cantu or Gaby at first, depending on which stays. |
