Sergio Mitre was unable to throw an inning for the Marlins this year

Pitcher Sergio Mitre, who underwent Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery on July 15, was released by the Marlins on Monday afternoon.

The right-hander missed the entire 2008 season due to arm troubles, which the 27-year-old experienced early in Spring Training. In his first Grapefruit League game, Mitre experienced right forearm tightness and was never able to throw pain free on a consistent basis thereafter.

After visiting Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., it was revealed that Mitre had a tear to his right elbow ligament. He underwent Tommy John surgery, which normally requires between 12-18 months of recovery for a starting pitcher.

Florida acquired Mitre from the Chicago Cubs as part of the Juan Pierre trade after the 2005 season.

Heading into Spring Training, Mitre was considered a candidate to be in the top three of the pitching rotation.

In 2007, Mitre finished 5-8 with a 4.65 ERA in 27 starts.

Mitre signed for $1.2 million in 2007, which was his first year eligible for arbitration.

The right-hander broke in with the Cubs in 2003, and he appeared in three games with two starts. For his career, he has played in 78 games with 52 starts. His lifetime record is 10-23 with a 5.36 ERA.

With the release of Mitre, the Marlins now have 16 players remaining who are eligible for arbitration.

No biggie. I guess he has no shot at contributing in 09. I thought they would try and keep him, but he must need all of next year to rehab.

if you release a player, can you sign him back?

I know if a player leaves via FA you can't sign him until something like May.

I still like the guy, but it would take alot for him to break the 2009 squad

Good guy, was kind of hoping we'd keep him around as a cheap backup. He'll catch on somewhere.

Kind of sad as I, too liked him but with JJ and Sanchez back and Volstad and Ricky thriving, we truly don't have room for him. It's probably best this way so he can find some place to play every day.

Yes.

As for part two, that's only if the player leaves as a free agent and isn't offered arbitration.
