![]() Any hopes of reliever Doug Waechter avoiding a disabled list stint were put to rest before the opener of a four-game series against the Cardinals on Monday. The Marlins placed their right-hander on the 15-day DL with right shoulder inflammation and recalled right-handed reliever Logan Kensing from Triple-A Albuquerque. Waechter, whose DL stint is retroactive to Thursday, hasn't pitched in a game since Wednesday because of right shoulder issues. The 27-year-old long-tossed on Sunday before the series finale against the Mets, but the Marlins obviously didn't feel like he'd be game-ready anytime soon. "It was one of those things where we didn't want to put him in a situation to try to hurry him up," said Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez, adding he doesn't feel like it would be a long-term issue. "He went to go see the doctor today, and we'll let him come back at his own pace." A little while back, Joe Nelson called Waechter, "The Alfredo Amezaga of the bullpen." And that's just what Waechter has been all season -- versatile. Whether it's been eating up frames in mop-up duty or pitching in crucial seventh or eighth innings to hand the ball over to closer Kevin Gregg with the lead intact, Waechter -- who was a starter in his first four years with the Rays -- has filled the role. "He's been terrific for us," Gonzalez said. "Early in the year he was our long guy, picked up some innings for us. Just recently, he became the seventh-, eighth-inning guy. And he's one of those guys that can throw a couple of innings. He's not just a one-inning pitcher. "I think it's better to be safe than sorry, and not put the pressure on him to try to come back. Just see the doctor, and our medical people don't think it's anything major." To replace Waechter, the Marlins brought back Kensing, who hasn't made an appearance in the big leagues since July 8. Before being sent down to Albuquerque on July 9, Kensing went 3-1 with a 4.19 ERA in 34 appearances. In his last three games for the Marlins, the 26-year-old gave up four runs in 3 1/3 innings. While pitching with the Isotopes, Kensing went 1-0 with a 6.39 ERA in 13 games. With the Marlins, Gonzalez said Kensing would be the "middle guy" in the bullpen, and Mark Hendrickson would resume his role as the long reliever. "The reports we got [on Kensing in the Minor Leagues] were good," Gonzalez said. "He deserves to get an opportunity to come back here and take a shot at it." Kensing recalled to fill in for Waechter | MLB.com: News
