Default Miller Scratched From Sunday's Start; on 15 Day DL

Left-hander Andrew Miller will be scratched from Sunday's scheduled outing with patellar tendinitis in his right knee.

The Marlins will place Miller on the disabled list retroactive to Monday and make a corresponding move before Friday's game. Instead of opening the series against the Braves Monday, Josh Johnson will move up a day.

Rookie Chris Volstad will make his second start Monday followed by a starter to be determined. The Marlins have a couple of in-house candidates in Mark Hendrickson and Doug Waechter, or they could give Frankie De La Cruz another shot.

For Miller, the knee problem is chronic. At the end of April, Miller revealed he was diagnosed with tendinitis last season and it occasionally flared up.

"It doesn't affect my pitching, I don't think," Miller said, earlier this season.

The Marlins knew about the problem and discussed it with the Tigers before completing the eight-player deal.

A stint on the disabled list might not be the worst thing for Miller, who closed out the first half with a miserable performance Sunday at Dodger Stadium. Miller lasted just 1 2/3 innings and allowed seven runs on five hits and walked five.

His ERA is back up to 5.63 after four of his last five starts and six of seven decisions.

De La Cruz has admitted that his nickname "Frankie" is the result of those who are unable to pronounce his first name correctly. This includes teammates, radio broadcasters Jim Price and Dan Dickerson, as well as Fox Sports Detroit broadcasters Mario Impemba and Rod Allen.
That being said Eulogio should get the start.

I expected Hendrickson to get the start.

It's interesting how they moved JJ and Volstad up instead of just calling up a guy to make the start.

I love these "trips to the DL" after meltdowns. I think its a great idea. We all know there is nothing wrong with him physically. But he could probably use a little breather to get the last few outings out of his head.

We should do a poll on who should start in his place.

Anibal is starting for Carolina tomorrow. He could be ready to return before Miller gets off the DL.

Actually, I do think there is something wrong with him physically. If there wasn't, they wouldn't have set him in the rotation for the 2nd half.

Minervini just said Miller is "hoping to avoid surgery" which I guess would mean it's a possibility.

The Florida Marlins placed starting pitcher Andrew Miller on the 15-day disabled list Friday with right patella tendinitis.

Miller, 23, was scheduled to pitch Sunday against the Philadelphia Phillies, but Josh Johnson will take his place due to the knee injury. He was examined by team doctors on Thursday and will test his knee by throwing a bullpen session in a few days.

The 23-year old Miller has allowed 21 runs while posting an 0-4 record in his past five outings. For the season, the left-hander is 5-9 with a 5.63 earned run average in 20 starts. He has been hampered by the patella tendinitis ever since last year with the Tigers.

To fill Miller's spot on the roster, Florida went down to Double-A Carolina to recall pitcher Jesus Delgado, who has yet to pitch at the big-league level.

According to the Miami Herald, a magnetic resonance imaging exam performed on Miller's knee didn't turn up anything unsightly.

''There's nothing ripped in half and nothing falling off the bone,'' Miller told the Herald

But it did reveal the chronic tendinitis that has hampered him for more than a year and now has put him on the disabled list. It is a condition the Marlins were aware of when they landed Miller in their December 2007 trade with the Detroit Tigers. And it could lead to surgery if the problem doesn't go away on its own.

''The idea is we want to avoid all that stuff at all costs,'' Miller said. ``But I guess [surgery] is one of the potential things.''
