Default Lindstrom Has MRI, Marlins Wait

Matt Lindstrom has compiled a 4.82 ERA in 9.1 IP this season

Hard-throwing Marlins reliever Matt Lindstrom had a magnetic resonance imaging test performed on his lower back before Thursday's game and said that he was ''concerned'' by the amount of discomfort his back is causing him.

But the Marlins were waiting to see the results of the MRI before deciding what course of action to take with Lindstrom and whether to place him on the disabled list.

Lindstrom was lifted from his outing in the eighth inning on Wednesday when he gave up a pair of runs on three hits while recording just one out.

The 28-year-old right-hander said his back has been bothering him for more than a week. Lindstrom also experienced lower-back pain last season, which he corrected by sleeping on a hard floor.

''But that time it felt like it was more the muscle,'' Lindstrom said. ``This one feels different. I'm concerned.''

An MRI taken on Thursday morning revealed no major damage to Matt Lindstrom's lower back, but it remains unclear when the Marlins reliever will throw again.
For now, the team isn't intending on placing its hard-throwing reliever on the disabled list.

"It's day-to-day," Lindstrom said.

Hampered by back problems for about a week, Lindstrom was lifted after facing three batters on Wednesday night. The right-hander surrendered three straight singles, allowing two runs to the Dodgers in the eighth inning.

But after Matt Kemp's single scored two, Marlins catcher Mike Rabelo signaled to the dugout that something was bothering Lindstrom.

Lindstrom was immediately replaced by Justin Miller.

On Thursday morning, Lindstrom's back was examined by a team doctor. The MRI was taken, and he was comforted by the encouraging news.

Still, he is taking a wait-and-see approach regarding when he will throw again.

"Last year, he had a back problem," manager Fredi Gonzalez said.

In 2007, Lindstrom experienced back soreness, which was caused by sleeping on a soft mattress. At the time, he started sleeping on the floor. While he had some discomfort, he didn't go on the DL.

Lindstrom hasn't ruled out sleeping on a different surface if it helps his back get better.

Lindstrom, who has a fastball that has been clocked at 100 mph, is an integral setup reliever. In 11 games, he's logged 8 1/3 innings. The two runs he surrendered on Wednesday raised his ERA from 3.00 to 5.40.

Along with Lindstrom, the Marlins also are nursing back left fielder Josh Willingham and first baseman Mike Jacobs, who has a sprained right middle finger.

With another day of treatment, both could be back starting on Friday when the Padres visit Dolphin Stadium.

Jacobs had a cortisone injection to the joint in his finger on Wednesday to reduce the swelling in the lower knuckle. He said he hopes to be ready for Friday.

Wes Helms has been starting at first base and Luis Gonzalez has been playing in left field.

That's a relief however now, he just adds to the list of Marlins on the day-to-day list which is growing everyday.
