Default Hermida Needs More Time On DL

Once the Marlins are convinced that Jeremy Hermida's left leg is fully ready, he will be reinstated from the disabled list.

There were still some concerns after Hermida played in a rehab assignment game for Class A Jupiter on Friday night, so he remains at least a few days away from being back on the Marlins' roster.

"We're going to give him some time," said manager Fredi Gonzalez. "I saw him Thursday, and it's not there yet. He's not confident enough yet to turn it loose. Why get him up here, where you may have to score from first on that ball in the gap? If he doesn't have that confidence, let's not push it."

On the disabled list retroactive to March 21 with a left hamstring strain, Hermida was eligible to be reinstated on Saturday. For a while, it appeared that he would make that timeline.

The 24-year-old right fielder began playing for Jupiter on Thursday, and Gonzalez was able to attend the game because the Marlins were off that day.

Hermida played the entire game on Thursday and Friday. To be cautious, the Marlins are scaling him back to playing five innings on Saturday. Barring any setbacks, he would return to playing full games on Sunday.

"You just can't get along if your leg isn't feeling good, or if you are not confident being able to run," Gonzalez said.

When Hermida returns, he will step in as the starting right fielder, projected to bat third.

With Hermida out, Luis Gonzalez and Brett Carroll are playing right field. On Friday night, Carroll made a strong throw in the ninth inning to toss out Ryan Doumit trying to stretch a single to a double.

Gonzalez compares Carroll's arm to that of the Braves' Jeff Francoeur.

The Marlins will open a six-game road trip on Monday in Washington, D.C., and they will travel to Houston on April 11.

Asked if Hermida would join the team in Washington, Gonzalez said: "It could be either/or -- I have no timetable for him.

"We're backing him off. He's played two days in a row. We're playing him five innings [on Saturday]. If he feels good, he can join us anytime."

Catcher Mike Rabelo, who is on the DL retroactive to March 21 with a left knee sprain, was slated to catch nine innings for Jupiter on Saturday.

Rabelo probably won't join the Marlins, at the earliest, until the Houston road series. Even that may be remote. The club has off-days on Tuesday and April 14.

If Rabelo had to miss the entire road trip, he could be ready when the team returns to Dolphin Stadium on April 15 to face the Braves.

Hermida went 3/5 with a HR today. Dunno how he looked in the field though.
