Gonzalez Announces Marlins' Rotation

Manager Fredi Gonzalez ended the speculation Thursday and announced his starting rotation.

As expected, left-hander Mark Hendsrickson will face the New York Mets in Monday's Dolphin Stadium opener, followed by right-hander Rick VandenHurk and left-hander Andrew Miller. Lefty Scott Olsen will pitch the first game of the Pirates series a week from Friday.

Gonzalez also said Ricky Nolasco will open the season in the bullpen as the long reliever, meaning top pitching prospect Chris Volstad will return to the minors after his start against the Yankees in the final exhibition game Saturday at Dolphin Stadium. Volstad likely will return to Double-A.

Nolasco is penciled in to start April 13 at Houston, the first time the Marlins need a fifth starter.

Non-roster invitees Joe Nelson and Doug Waechter will be in uniform for the two exhbition games against the Yankees before reporting to Triple-A Albuquerque. Nelson will work out of the bullpen and Waechter will join the rotation.

Gonzalez doesn't anticipate finalizing the rest of the roster until after Saturday's game. That way the team can determine whether outfielders Cody Ross and Jeremy Hermida are ready to play or if they'll require a stint on the disabled list. Both Ross and Hermida will remain in Jupiter this weekend and play in minor league games so they can be disabled retroactively if necessary.

Tough to see Volstad go after such a great spring but it's probably for the best. Got to believe he's the guy on call though in the event of an injury. Even if there isn't, I really hope we see him in the majors this year after a little more seasoning in the minors.

eh...such mediocrity. Not too thrilled with a journeyman 1 and the incredible Hurk #2 but it's the best we can do.

We still could see Volstad sooner thaner later. Gonzalez hasn't said who will pitch on the 13th because "something may change along the way". Even though Nolasco is breaking camp with the team as the long reliever, Volstad should remain on schedule to pitch on the 13th on regular rest.

The four-man rotation is finalized but we'll have to wait a little longer on the 5-man.

Wouldn't be shocked to not see Volstad until the All Star Break at earliest

You have to think Volstad is the first up in case of a major injury to any of the arms (unless the timing interferes with JJ and/or Anibal's return, of course). You simply can't ignore the numbers he put up in the spring.

I'm pretty bummed about Nolasco getting the nod as the 5 SP, as I still believe he's better suited for the pen. However maybe he'll either shut me up or be banished from the spot for good.
