![]() ![]() Cameron Maybin's bid to become the Marlins' Opening Day center fielder ended Monday afternoon when the Marlins optioned him to Double-A Carolina. Maybin was vying for the job with Alejandro De Aza and Cody Ross, both of whom presumably will split time out there. The centerpiece of the Miguel Cabrera- Dontrelle Willis trade with the Tigers, Maybin went 0 for 5 Monday against the Astros and watched his Grapefruit League average dip to .190. Considering he doesn't turn 21 until April 4 and he only has 69 at-bats above high Class-A, the Marlins have no need to rush him. "We still see him as the center fielder of the future," president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said. "He just needs to refine a few things and needs additional at-bats at the minor league level to work through some of those things, and then hopefully he'll be our center fielder for a long time." Said Maybin: "Just another step I have to take. I'll work on some stuff and try to get back." Source I haven't seen that any other non-roster players were reassigned so, unless I find something else later, this brings the total number of players in camp to 32; 24 roster players and 8 non-roster invitees. Can't tell if this is a wow because we're actually doing the right thing for like the 3rd time since Beinfest's been calling the shots, or a wow because, well, his spring numbers say he probably deserved a little more time in camp.

I think this was the right thing to do, the right place to send him (Carolina) and the right time to do it. I hope he absolutely rakes in Carolina (and learns how to hit the off-speed stuff).
