![]() ![]() Mark Hendrickson was chosen by manager Fredi Gonzalez to start the Florida Marlins' season opener March 31 against the New York Mets at Dolphin Stadium. "He pitched terrific in spring training and he's our veteran guy," Gonzalez said. "The way he's pitched in spring training, he deserves it." Through four starts this spring, the 33-year-old has a 1.69 ERA. Through 16 innings, he has allowed 15 hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out nine. In his last outing, March 18 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the 6-foot-9 lefty gave up three hits in six scoreless innings. Palm Beach Post

This does not make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
It's just kind of scary when your Opening Day starter is chosen based on Spring Training performances (think about it, how many teams base their regular season rotation on Grapefruit League stats......?) I know this year is a building year and I'm fine with that and I hope I'm dead wrong on Hendrickson but I don't see him any higher than our #4 guy by June. I don't think we had much choice. Olsen had the shoulder tendonitis set-back, Mitre is out until at least June, Miller looks like he's fighting for a rotation spot period, Nolasco hasn't been that great and he's coming off a year where he missed most of the season with an injury, Volstad and Badenhop aren't even on the 40-man roster and haven't made their major league debuts yet and VandenHurk is entering his sophmore season. We had little choice. At least he hasn't been getting lit up.

Oh I agree with you 100% that there wasn't much choice.
I'm just saying I'm scared for the rotation. I'm anticipating an over worked bullpen that enters a lot of games in the 4th inning. |
