Default Marlins Add Four to the 40 Man Roster at Deadline

MIAMI -- The Florida Marlins today announced that they have added four players to their 40-man roster, selecting the contracts of catcher Brett Hayes and right-handed pitchers Chris Leroux, Dallas Trahern and Tim Wood. The announcement was made by Marlins' President of Baseball Operations, Larry Beinfest. The Marlins 40-man roster now stands at 40 players.

Hayes, 24, was selected by the Marlins with the 79th overall pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, in the compensation round following the second round. He split the 2008 season between Double-A Carolina and Triple-A Albuquerque, batting .256 (76x297) with 11 home runs and 35 RBI in 91 games overall. Hayes was born in Pasadena, CA and attended the University of Nevada-Reno.

Leroux, 24, was the Marlins' seventh-round selection in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of Winthrop University in South Carolina. He was 6-7, 3.65 with one save in 57 relief appearances with Single-A Jupiter in 2008, striking out 78 in 74 innings. He is a native of Montreal, Canada.

Trahern, who turns 23 on Nov. 29, was acquired by the Marlins in an eight-player trade with Detroit, Dec. 5, 2007. He made 21 starts with Albuquerque in 2008 and one with Jupiter. He was 5-11, 6.16 with Albuquerque a year after going 12-6, 3.87 with Double-A Erie. A Kansas native, Trahern was selected by Detroit in the 34th round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft.

Wood, 26, was the Marlins' 44th-round pick in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft out of Pima CC in Arizona. He spent the majority of 2008 with Jupiter, going 5-2, 1.80 with one save in 27 games, one start. He also made 12 appearances with Double-A Carolina, going 2-1, 5.75. Wood, who is currently pitching for Mesa in the Arizona Fall League, was born in Tucson, AZ.

WOW

No Chris Mobley,Jacob Marceaux, or Greg Burns????

Why were Tim Wood and Dallas Trahern put on the 40 man???

I think we could lose 1 of the RP and also doesn't this count us out of the Rule 5 Draft??

I think Mobley is for sure gone. I have no idea what they are thinking.

Marceaux, Burns, and Allison are the other notable omissions.

Allison is probably safe tho

The other 3 guys can help someone

Mobley-Closer Type/Setup
Marceaux-Power Arm
Burns-CF that can play all 3 OF Spots and RUN!!!!

Sad tho because Harvey Garcia wont help this year and Wood was not eligible for Rule 5

Have NO problem with Hayes or Leroux protected tho, they could be up in 2010

We'll have one more spot open once Rabelo clears waivers tomorrow . I'm just still shocked that Trahern got added over Marceaux and Allison. Wtf?

well Allison more than likely is safe

hard to believe someone would put him on their 25 man when he hasn't pitched a day out of A ball and he doesn't have the lights out stuff he once did

OK, I've amended my stance.

I don't think we have a 3 step plan.

well I doubt Allison makes anyone's 25 man roster, so he's probably safe

Awesome. This "big move" they were cooking up was well worth the wait.

According to the Sun Sentinel, he is eligible and would assuredly be taken if left off the 40-man.

Why does this article say Doolittle? I don't see where he was drafted, which leads me to believe he wasn't, and he didn't debut until 2007. I don't think he applies.

Wood is clearly eligible as he was a 2002 draftee. Everyone 2004 and prior is fair game not on a 40 man, and players 19+ in age from the 2005 draft.

I take it Mobley, Marceaux, Burns, Allison, and probably K. Harvey are the 'top' players we left unprotected.

I hated the Marceaux pick when we made it. What a silly draft.

Well if 5 or 6 teams were lined up maybe you keep Wood but Mobley and Marceaux could have the same number of teams lined up for them

Still would have kept Greg Burns(Young guy who can RUN and play ALL OF spots) Some team will pick him and just let him be the 25th man- Come in in 8th inning RUN and play great defensive and then send him down next year

No way Kris Harvey,Jon Fulton,Jeff Allison get picked but first 2 are nothing more than projects.

Doolittle is eligible,he was a Non Drafted FA signing

In 2005 or 2006?

It has to be 2005 to be eligible.
