Seriously. I hope we all end up looking stupid soon because it ends up being that Bonifacio's new offensive prowess is real.

Still striving to shake off the rust from missing so much time the past two seasons, Marlins right-hander Anibal Sanchez is getting in some work pitching in the Venezuelan Winter League.
The 24-year-old has already made two appearances for Magallanes in his native country. The early results predictably indicate Sanchez needs time to get back on track. In 6 1/3 innings, he's given up eight runs, while walking one and not yet logging a strikeout.

More than the end result, the importance of winter ball for Sanchez is to regain his command.

In June 2007, Sanchez underwent right shoulder surgery performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. Because of lost time due to injury, Sanchez has thrown 109 2/3 total innings the past two seasons.

Sanchez made his debut for Magallanes on Nov. 28, throwing 1 2/3 innings. He followed that up with 4 2/3 innings on Wednesday.

For the Marlins in 2008, Sanchez joined the rotation in July, and he made 10 starts. The long layoff was obvious, as his record was 2-5 with a 5.57 ERA in 51 2/3 innings.

Florida is hopeful Sanchez can revert back to his old form. As a rookie in 2006, he was 10-3 with a 2.83 ERA, and he made history by tossing the fourth no-hitter in club history.

Sanchez is a candidate to pitch for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. The right-hander also promises to play a key roll in the Marlins' rotation, which right now shapes up to include fellow righties Josh Johnson, Ricky Nolasco and Chris Volstad, as well as lefty Andrew Miller.

The Marlins have several players getting extra work in the Caribbean Winter Leagues.

Dan Meyer, who was claimed off waivers from the A's, is a 27-year-old left-hander who has already made five relief appearances for Aguilas in the Dominican Republic.

Meyer began pitching winter ball on Nov. 23, and his last appearance was a one-third of an inning of scoreless relief on Wednesday.

Here are some other Marlins to keep an eye on in the Winter Leagues:

Jose Ceda, Dominican Republic: The Marlins acquired Ceda, a hard-throwing right-hander, from the Cubs for reliever Kevin Gregg. Ceda made one appearance for Leones, on Oct. 29, but that is his only outing. The reason Ceda has stopped playing is because of a contractual conflict. The right-hander is healthy and ready for Spring Training.

Carlos Martinez, Dominican Republic: The right-handed reliever spent this past season in the Minor Leagues. A hard thrower, Martinez could be a big factor in the bullpen for Florida this season. He has made six appearances for Cibao, and he last threw on Nov. 25.

Jesus Delgado, Venezuela: Delgado appeared in two games for the Marlins in '08, and he was in the All-Star Futures Game at Yankee Stadium. The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.37 ERA in nine games, with three starts, for Aragua. He's already thrown 26 1/3 innings after logging 70 total innings during the regular season.

Alfredo Amezaga, Mexico: Always on the go, the versatile Marlins backup infielder/center fielder has already appeared in 17 games for Obregon. Amezaga will play for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic. He began playing for Obregon on Nov. 23.

Emilio Bonifacio, Dominican Republic: Acquired from the Nationals as part of the Scott Olsen/Josh Willingham trade, Bonifacio has had a busy Winter League season playing for Licey. The switch-hitter has racked up about 150 at-bats while seeing action in the outfield. The Marlins plan on giving him a shot at third base in Spring Training.

Several Marlins are playing winter ball. But the team has shut down Anibal Sanchez, who made two appearances in his native Venezuela. Sanchez, projected to be in the rotation, is physically fine. The team feels he doesn't need the extra work.
Marlins on lookout for catching depth

Hmm. He only threw 79.2 innings this year (combing both his major league innings with his minor league rehab appearnaces), makes two horrible starts in Venezuela and the FO doesn't think he need the extra work? Very interesting.
