Jammers sign on for two more years
General Manager Matt Drayer has announced that the Florida Marlins will be the Jamestown Jammers' parent team for the next two seasons in the New York-Penn League.
The player-development relationship with the Florida Marlins started during the 2002 season. The latest deal will keep Florida players coming to Jamestown until the end of the 2010 season.
''The overall performance of the team has progressed throughout the years,'' Drayer said. ''We look to continue the winning ways of last season now that the farm system of the Marlins has solidified since the 2003 World Series Championship.''
After leading the NY-P League's Pinckney Division for most of the 2008 season, the Jammers finish second and earned a wild-card berth in the playoffs. Jamestown swept McNamara Division champion Staten Island 2-0 in the semifinals and then the Jammers were swept 2-0 by Batavia, the Pinckney Division champion, in the championship series.
Brian Chattin, Marlins director of minor league development said, ''All of us from the Marlins are happy to be back to Jamestown for another two years. Jamestown provides a solid place for our young players to break into the professional baseball.''
The Jammers-Marlins relationship has been established long enough to have many former Jammers players make it all the way to the big leagues. Those players include Chris Volstad, Jeremy Hermida, Brett Carroll, Gabby Sanchez, Logan Kensing, Taylor Tankersley and Dan Barone,
''We look forward to each June for the new group of players to come to Jamestown and now we look forward to our former players making their way to 'The Show,''' Drayer said. ''The fans of the Jammers get to follow these guys all the way to the Marlins. It is fun to see our guys playing in the big leagues.''
Jamestown was an original member the PONY League in 1939 and remained in the league until 1957, when the name was changed. Jamestown returned to the league in 1961 through 1973. A third return to the league for Jamestown began in 1977.
