Brett took his last start and pretty much repeated it on Saturday against Jacksonville. He threw 6 innings, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks while again striking out 4. He was in line for the win until the bullpen blew it. His record remains at 2-5 and he lowered his ERA down to 5.31.
Brett has only made one start this year where he has given up less than 6 hits and he's had mixed results in those other games; 5 games with an ERA for the game under 5 and 4 games with an ERA over 5. He always seems to be working himself too hard but that is something that he should improve on as he gets more seasoning at the AA level. His 1.29 GO/AO ratio is not what you would expect from a sinkerballer but, again, hopefully he'll straighten this out as he gets more experience. Brett's next start will be Thursday in Tennessee against the Cubs AA affliate. Last edited by mbaamin08; May 25th, 2008 at 10:23 PM. |

Brett is being remarkedly consistent. His start he made today looks almost exactly like his last start which was almost exactly like the start before. Brett went 6 innings, this time giving up 2 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5. He was in line for the win but, like what happened to Volstad two days earlier, the bullpen blew a big lead and Brett took a no decision. His record remains 2-5 and his ERA has dropped to 5.09.
Brett had a base runner in each of his first five innings but no runs crossed the plate until the 5th when both runs Brett would allow scored on 4 singles in the inning. Brett recovered from the inning nicely, retiring all three batters he faced in the 6th. Brett's next start will be Tuesday in Montgomery against the Rays AA affliate. |

Brett got rocked today in his start in Montgomery; 4.1 IP, 11 H, 8 R (all earned), 4 BB and 3 K's. He took the loss, bringing his record to 2-6, and his ERA has jumped up to 5.82.
Brett started off on a bad note when the first four batters all reached base on four consecutive singles; scoring the first run and loading the bases. The fifth batter grounded into a double play but the runner from 3rd scored. Another ground out ended the inning. In the second, Brett gave up a lead off double and then a walk. A sac. bunt advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd and a single scored the 3rd run against Brett. Another walk loaded the bases but Brett got the next two outs on a strikeout and line out to leave them loaded. Brett faired better in the next two inning, allowing only a single in the 3rd and a walk in the 4th. The wheels fell off in the 5th. Just like in the first inning, Brett allowed the first four batters to reach on four consecutive singles; this time scoring two runs. Brett got the next batter to fly out before walking the next batter, again loading the bases. That would be the last batter that Brett faced as he was replaced by Timothy Wood. Wood gave up a two RBI double to the first batter he faced and an RBI single to the next batter, closing the book on Brett. Brett will look to rebound from this bad start next week in Carolina. He will pitch against Jacksonville but the day he will pitch is up in the air with Volstad returning from the DL. My best guess is that Brett returns to pitching the last game of the series which would put him pitching on Tuesday the 10th. Either that, or he could stay on his current day and pitch on Monday the 9th. I will update this date when I know for sure. Last edited by mbaamin08; June 3rd, 2008 at 11:14 PM. With Volstad missing a second start and Tucker being called up, Brett should make his next start Monday in Carolina against Jacksonville.
Volstad is scheduled to start on Friday so, after this week, Brett could be pushed back a day if they leave Glen in the rotation or he will stay pitching the 4th game of each series. I will update this when I know for sure. Last edited by mbaamin08; June 9th, 2008 at 02:32 AM. |

Brett's start on Monday was much better than his previous start (though he would have been hard pressed to have made it worse). Brett gave up 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits and 1 walk in 5 innings while striking out 2. He was in line for the win until Yourkin blew the save. Brett remains at 2-6 and his ERA dropped a little to 5.67.
There is still a little uncertainty about when Brett's next start will be with Volstad coming off the DL but I expect Glen to return to the bullpen which would leave Brett where he is. Assuming that is the case, Brett will pitch again on Saturday in Carolina against Birmingham, the White Sox AA affliate. |

Brett had a solid outing tonight, putting up a quality start. He pitched 6 innings, giving up 2 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks while striking out one. He picked up the win and lowered his ERA to 5.47. Assuming Carolina is running with a six man rotation, Brett should make his next start a week from today (because of an off day) in Carolina against Huntsville.

Carolina apparently went back to a 5 man rotation because Brett faced Chattanooga for a second straight start. Right now, Brett is probably wishing they stayed with the 6 man rotation as Brett gave up 7 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings. He took the loss, bringing his record to 3-7 and his ERA is now 5.89. Brett gave up 4 runs in the first and 1 in the second. He settled down for a couple innings before giving up 2 more runs in the fifth. Brett should make his next start Sunday in Carolina.

Brett had a much better outing tonight. He went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4. He got a no decision and lowered his ERA to 5.70.
He gave up 1 run in the first and the other in the 5th but had little trouble the other innings. He got 10 groundouts to 4 flyouts; a good indicator that his sinker was on and working well for him. It looks like Carolina is running a 5-man rotation with Barone back in AAA so Brett should make his next start on Thursday in Jacksonville. |

For the second day in a row, a Carolina starting pitcher puts up a quality start only to take a loss. It was Brett's turn today, as he put up nearly an identical line score as Volstad did yesterday, even drawing the loss. Brett pitched 6 innings, giving up 3 runs (all earned) on 8 hits and 2 walks with 4 K's. His record is now 3-8 and his ERA is now 5.63.
Brett worked himself in and out of trouble all night. He had runners at the corners with only 1 out in 4 of his 6 innings but he managed to get away with only allowing 1 run through the first 5 innings. Brett again got in trouble in the 6th as he gave up two runs that inning. Brett's next outing should come on Tuesday in Birmingham. |

Brett had a fantastic night yesterday in his first start of the year against Birmingham. Brett pitched 7 innings, allowing only 1 run on 7 hits and no walks while striking out 5. He took a no decision as the score was still tied at 1 when he left. His records remains 3-8 and he has lowered his ERA to 5.33.
One of the most positive things about his start was the amount of balls hit on the ground, indicating his sinker was back. Hopefully, he can build from this start. The AA All-Star break starts this weekend so Brett will make his next start sometime after the 16th. |

Brett had another good outing on Saturday. Brett pitched five innings of three-hit ball, allowing just one unearned run in the fourth to earn the victory, his first since June 17th. His record is now 4-8 and his ERA has fallen to 5.08.
Assuming Anibal is part of the 5-man rotation, Brett should make his next start Friday the 25th in Carolina against Huntsville. |

Brett had a great outing tonight, his best of the season in fact. He went 7 innings only allowing 1 run on 3 hits with no walks or K's. He settled for a no decision as the game was tied at 1 when he left. His record remains 4-8 and his ERA has fallen to 4.85.
He induced 9 groundouts to 11 flyouts which is unusal for a sinkerballer and two of the three hits he allowed were for extra bases (1 double and 1 triple). However, this was his fourth quality start in his last 5 games. Hopefully he has figured something out and can continue to keep this up. His next start should make his next start on the 30th in Carolina against Jacksonville. |

It appears Brett has figured some things out. He pitched into the eighth inning for the first time this season on Wednesday night, taking a four-hit shutout into the eighth before leaving with the bases loaded and one out. Jarrett Santos permitted a two-run single to James Tomlin, but Carolina still led 5-2. Brett picked up the win to improve his record to 5-8 and his ERA has fallen to 4.71.
Brett should make his next start Monday in Tennessee against the Cubs AA affliate. |

Brett had a very short night tonight, leaving in the third after facing 4 batters that inning. He wasn't pitching that badly which makes me think he may be hurt. He ended the night with a line of 2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K. He took a no decision and his ERA is now 4.78.
There is nothing up on Carolina's website yet. I'll have to wait until tomorrow for the game summary to come up to find out if Brett is indeed hurt. I'll update this as soon as I find out something. |

According to the radio broadcast, Brett left because of a blister. We'll have to see how long it takes for him to get back out there. His next start is due up Saturday in Carolina against Mobile.
Props to Marlins#1 for the info.

Brett returned from the DL to pitch the second game of a double header against West Tenn on Saturday. He threw 4 innings, giving up 4 runs (all in the second inning) on 7 hits and 3 walks while striking out 2. He took a no decision and his ERA rose to 4.91. He did enduce 7 groundouts as well.
Because of Carolina's off-day tomorrow, Brett should make his next start on Friday in Carolina against Mississippi. |
