College baseball: Two players with Marin ties drafted - Marin Independent Journal

"Atkins was offered a scholarship by Jackson State, but admitted the chance to test the professional ranks was enticing. He'll be further evaluated by Marlins' scouts over the summer to see if he might be able to fetch "10th- to 15th-round money," Atkins said.

"It's a once in a lifetime opportunity for me," said Atkins, whose father Fred Atkins, Sr. played for the New York Yankees. "It's really exciting to look up on that board and see that someone recognizes you."

COM coach Steve Berringer said the team's needs may factor in to Atkins' decision.

"If (the Marlins) are really short on outfielders and he feels like he can go in there and have a shot to make a difference in the farm system, then it might be another thing," Berringer said.

Atkins admitted the long-term benefits of going to college might out-weigh the short-term gains of playing professionally in the minor leagues. He could improve his stock, too. Last year, Atkins hit .294 with one home run and this year he batted .390 with eight homers.

He was drafted in the 29th round last year, but was taken later this year because many scouts knew he was pretty set on taking his game to Jackson State.

That doesn't mean the prospect of a professional contract isn't tempting, though.

"It's baseball, and you're getting paid to play it," Atkins said. "Life can't get much better than that"
