The Florida Marlins chose Florida Gulf Coast slugger Jason Peacock in the 26th round of the Major League Baseball Draft.

Peacock helped FGCU make history as the Eagles set a record with three players being chosen. Junior left-handed pitcher Richard Bleier was chosen in the sixth round by the Texas Rangers and junior right-handed pitcher Casey Coleman was taken in the 15th round by the Chicago Cubs.

A senior first baseman, Peacock earned Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year honors after he hit .434 with nine homers and 53 RBI. He also committed just two errors and had a .996 fielding percentage.

Signed, sealed, delivered, apparently:

Teammate Jason Peacock signed with the Florida Marlins after being drafted in the 26th round. ...

Peacock inked his deal with the Marlins on Monday. He’ll be paid about a $2,000 bonus. Peacock will drive to Jupiter on Wednesday and begin practicing with the Gulf Coast Marlins on Friday.

“It’s a new opportunity more than anything,” the Bartow native said. “We’ll see how it goes.”

A senior first baseman, he earned Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year honors after he hit .434 with nine homers and 53 RBI.

So he gets 4 figures and our 30th round guy will get 6?

What's the deal here?

Nothing that unusual about it.

That also means we won't be seeing Crawford until August 15th, correct?

Why? Once he's signed, he's signed.

I may be thinking of something else, but I thought that if you signed someone for an amount much higher than what their round commands, they weren't allowed to play until August 15th.

I've never heard of that. Just doing some quick research, I randomly picked the Royals 2007 draft. They picked Mike Lehmann in the 20th round, gave him 123k and he debuted on July 15.

Lucky to get 2,000!!

But the "rule" which is laughable is if you sign for over slot you can't offically sign until Aug 15.

Which means he can sign and be assigned somewhere but cant actually appear in games or have his contract announced as signed.

I know some teams will announce it and take the crap from MLB because they only have 2 or 3 guys that are over slot but 100,000 for a 30th round pick might piss them off!!!!

As a 26th round draft pick of the Florida Marlins, Jason Peacock knows he might be at a slight disadvantage to those picked before him.

But as long as he continues producing, he feels the organization will have room for him.

So far, he’s producing.

Despite not getting everyday playing time, Peacock is more than holding his own in the rookie Gulf Coast League. The former FGCU standout is hitting .301 at his first minor league stop, collecting 25 hits in 83 at-bats with nine RBIs.

“If I keep hitting .300, I’ll have a chance to keep advancing through the system,” Peacock said. “It’s a little tough not playing every day, especially in the power department. When you play every few days, you just focus on hitting the ball square. The power comes through more repetition.”

Peacock gets two to three starts per week at first base for the Gulf Coast Marlins in Jupiter. The games are about as far from big league glamour as you can get, as they’re generally played at noon under sweltering conditions with few fans in attendance. The recent rain from Tropical Storm Fay has given Peacock and his teammates a bit of a reprieve as the Marlins head into their final week of league play.

“With no games, we’ve been able to get some extra work in both in the weight room and in the batting cages,” Peacock said. “It gets to be a grind, being at the ballpark at 7:30 in the morning, playing the game at noon and not usually leaving until the late afternoon. The rainouts have given us a bit of a break from the heat.”

Peacock, chosen as the Atlantic Sun player of the year after leading the league with a .434 batting average, says his time at FGCU certainly prepared him for the minor leagues.

“In college, the pitchers were a little more fine with their control,” Peacock said. “Here, you see guys with much better stuff as far as velocity goes, but many of them aren’t as good with their control as the guys I saw in college.”

Peacock says he’s got quite a busy fall and winter ahead of him.

“(The Marlins) give you a workout regimen to follow and I’ll be focusing on getting myself ready for spring training next year,” Peacock said. “Hopefully I play well in the spring and can get a spot on one of the full-season Single A teams.”

Peacock will return to FGCU this fall to work on finishing his degree. He says he’s about five or six classes shy of his degree, one of which he’ll have to take online.

In addition to studying for his classes, he’ll be working on what he feels are deficiencies in his game.

“I need to work on my speed and agility a little more to be more effective defensively at first base,” he said. “And I’ll keep hitting the weight room to improve my strength. I want to give myself the best chance to move up through the system.”
