Are you kidding me? I don't think we've ever drafted a guy from Nebraska, and we get 2 today.

And Nebraska's not pissed about this one. He was a Senior.

Very refined pitcher. He doesn't have the dominating stuff, and I'm not sure it'll translate, but he's a guy that will move very fast in my opinion, could probably pitch in Greensboro or Jupiter right now, but once he gets to AA that'll really decide if he can make it to the big leagues.

Is he a groundball pitcher or is he just a guy who pitches to contact?

His fastball has pretty good downward movement. He's got good command with his secondary pitches as well.

Baseball America

Righthander Johnny Dorn may not overwhelm hitters, but he wins. His 36 victories entering the NCAA playoffs led all active Division I pitchers. He has plus-plus command and a feel for mixing four pitches. Dorn strained his elbow as a freshman at the 2005 College World Series, and he pitched with diminished velocity for two seasons before moving back up to 86-89 mph this spring. His slider may be his best pitch, and he also throws a loopy curveball and a changeup.

GRAND ISLAND —

Several times in his life, Johnny Dorn imagined what it would be like to learn that he was going to finally achieve his goal of being a professional baseball player and celebrate the news with his father.

However, it's probably safe to assume that Dorn never pictured the moment taking place at a gas station in Central City.

But that's the way it went down Friday as Dorn learned that he had been selected in the 15th round (No. 448 overall) of the Major League Baseball draft by the Florida Marlins. The right-handed pitcher from Grand Island was one of seven Nebraska Cornhuskers taken in the two-day draft, prompting a little celebratory moment between Dorn and his father, Steve, while others were paying at the pumps.

"I was just happy," Johnny Dorn said of finding out the news. "Obviously, you always want to get drafted. From what I was hearing (from scouts), I thought I might be going a little higher than that, but you can't complain when you get an opportunity to get to be a professional baseball player."

Last year after his junior season at Nebraska, Dorn put himself through the agony of watching the draft unfold, pick by pick, on a computer screen. After 1,453 names popped up, the draft came to a close and Dorn wasn't selected.

He wasn't about to put himself through that whole process again. That's one reason why Dorn and his father were out and about this time when the good news came.

"I said to heck with watching the draft,'" Dorn said. "I did that last year for two days and I didn't want to do it again.

"It didn't make you feel too good when your name doesn't pop up."

Dorn, who was 6-2 with a 2.45 ERA this past season as Nebraska's No. 1 starting pitcher, said he was told by several scouts that he could go somewhere in the top 10 rounds of this year's draft. However, after what transpired last June, Dorn said he didn't put much stock into anyone's speculation.

"You just never know," Dorn said. "That's just the baseball draft."

Dorn finished his college career as one of the top pitchers in Husker history, posting a 37-10 record. The Grand Island Senior High graduate ranked second in the program's history in wins, strikeouts (298), innings pitched (386 2/3) and starts (58).

A Golden Spikes and Howser Award semifinalist this year, Dorn ranked second in the Big 12 Conference with 102 strikeouts and was among the top five of the conference in opponent batting average (.214, fifth), innings pitched (106 1/3, third) and ERA (fifth).

A first-team All-Big 12 selection, Dorn allowed three runs or less in 13 of his 15 starts this season and reached double figures in strikeouts four times. That included a career-high 13 strikeouts against Northern Colorado.

Dorn said he couldn't have cared less about which team drafted him. He just wanted a chance.

"I had 30 favorite teams last year, so it didn't matter to me," Dorn said. "Florida is kind of a small-market team and I've heard they'll try to develop their young guys. Hopefully it's a good fit."

Regardless, Dorn said just being drafted was a dream come true.

"Baseball was always my No. 1 goal and I always wanted to be a pro baseball player," Dorn said. "Ideally, it probably would've been in a Cubbies uniform, but I'll certainly take the Marlins, too."

Dorn said he had a short conversation Friday with an individual from the Marlins organization who said he'd give Dorn more information about what comes next either later Friday night or Saturday. Dorn will likely be headed to play in one of the short-season minor league circuits in the eastern part of the country.

In visiting with past teammates and other players who have been involved in professional baseball, Dorn said he has a pretty good idea of what's ahead.

"I think if you're in my situation, you've got to stay healthy," Dorn said. "If you get hurt, it's just too bad. They're not going to spend a lot of time on a 15th-rounder that they give $1,000 and a plane ticket to. You've got to be sharp, you've got to perform and you've got to stay healthy."
