Ht: 6-6 - Wt: 225 - Bats: Left - Throws: Left - DOB: 10/13/89
Johnson, who did not participate in any of the prominent summer or fall showcases, first came to the attention of local scouts in fall scout ball games. He's 6-foot-7 and was just emerging after starting this season in the bullpen at Westlake High. He got exposure when scouts came to see teammates Cutter Dykstra and Shane Kroker. At his best, the Fresno State recruit delivers a lively 91-93 mph fastball from a low three-quarters slot. He adds a hard curveball and a changeup, though both need work. Johnson's primary obstacle is his severe lack of control and command, which causes him to get behind hitters and run up high pitch counts. Part of that is inexperience, another part is growing into his large frame. However, in this spring season Johnson has become a big favorite of local scouts, who are fascinated by his intimidating frame and electric raw stuff.

For the pointless contribution, he's a day younger than me. That's a scary thought.

But are you sure he's lefty? He's throwing righty in the picture.

Johnson surfaced on the scouts' radar this season once he started throwing harder. He took the call from the Marlins while listening to the draft on the radio at his house.

"They like tall pitchers, so it wasn't that much of a surprise they picked me," said Johnson, the 178th pick overall. "All the scouts I met and talked with were really nice people and good people and it seemed like they were really happy that they picked me."

Johnson has committed to Fresno State, but is planning to weigh his options after talking with the Marlins.

"We are not 100 percent sure yet what is going to go on," Johnson said. "Hopefully, I go play pro."

Fresno State just won the CWS... that should be enough to sway this kid to college.
