Coastal Carolina closer Pete Andrelczyk has heard he could be selected between the second and fifth rounds. Dock Doyle hopes to be taken in the first 10 rounds. David Sappelt and Bobby Gagg seem intent on beginning their professional careers.

“We’ve put four years into this program and tried to do our fair share of building it up,” Andrelczyk said. “You don’t want to stop playing with everybody. You never want to make this your last game.”

Last season, the draft took place after Coastal’s season ended, so it was not an issue.

Andrelczyk (32nd round Baltimore) and Doyle (44th round Atlanta) were drafted last year but returned to Coastal.

Andrelczyk, Doyle and Sappelt say it will not be an issue this week either.

Chanticleers coach Gary Gilmore trusts his players are focused on North Carolina.

“Two years ago, we won 30 games because we had eight or nine guys with agents that were playing for their draft status,” Gilmore said. “Ever since that point, we have really stressed here that your draft status is going to be reflective of the team’s performance.

“Scouts come and watch teams that win 50 games, they don’t watch a lot of teams that win 30 games.”

Scouts recorded Andrelczyk’s fastball in the 91-94 mph range. In Andrelczyk’s favor is the trend of pro teams selecting college relief pitchers high in the draft.

Andrelczyk redshirted as a freshman at Coastal Carolina and has improved every year. Last season he made 23 appearances for the Chanticleers, tallying one save—which was good enough to get him drafted in the 32nd round by the Orioles as a redshirt sophomore. He returned to school, however, and moved into the full-time closer role. His velocity took another jump, and he's now considered to have a power package on the mound. Tallying better than a strikeout an inning, Andrelczyk works off a low-90s fastball that can touch 95 mph. He also has a hard slider that sits between 83-85 mph with tight rotation and late action that is especially tough on righthanded hitters. He has the best pure stuff on Coastal's team, and he profiles as a reliever in the pros as well. A late bloomer, Andrelcyzk was gaining momentum up draft boards at the end of the season.

signed.

Coastal Carolina juniors Pete Andrelczyk, Dock Doyle and David Sappelt are going pro. ...

Andrelcyzk (148th overall pick to Florida) and Doyle (164th overall to the Mets) were each selected in the fifth round last Thursday. Sappelt followed on the second day of the draft, selected by the Reds in the ninth round.

None of the players disclosed their signing bonuses, saying only that they signed for slot money. Last year the 148th overall pick, Trevor Pippin, signed for $140,000, and the 164th overall pick, Chance Corgan, signed for $142,200, according to the Baseball America draft database.

Players drafted from 260-270 overall last year received bonuses between $18,000 and $150,000.

Andrelczyk was already in Jupiter, Fla., home to the Marlins' scouting bureau, on Wednesday night. He left Wednesday morning to fill out paper work and take a drug test, which is required for all players taken in the top 10 rounds.

"I barely had time to pack up two bags," Andrelczyk said. "My car is still in Myrtle Beach. I gave away my bed and television. It's pretty crazy."

Andrelczyk will report to Jamestown (N.Y.) to begin a Class A-level short season on June 17th. He said he will be used as a reliever, though MLB teams often start pitchers in the minor leagues that they project as big league relief pitchers.

Good, keep him in relief. I think he could fly through the system.
