Baseball America on Petersen

Righthander Curtis Petersen is projectable because he's 6-foot-4, 180 pounds and has a clean delivery. He usually pitches at 86-89 mph with his fastball but has touched 92 mph, and he throws his curveball and changeup for strikes. He's committed to Nebraska, and like many of Texas' best high schoolers this year, he figures to attend college.

I wouldn't be upset if we don't sign him.

I hope we sign him like we did Kyle Kaminska last year.

Didnt we waste an early pick on Easterling last year? Why are we doing that again? Who the hell is running this draft?

Easterling wanted to play football. Peterson wants to play baseball but likely wants 3rd to 2nd round money.

The bottom line is that you will never get the kind of pitching instruction in college that you will get in pro ball.

Take the slot money and get started already!!! Joba put it into another gear once the Yankees got hold of him.

Good advice. That's coming from Mr. Kaminska, so it's most definitely valid.

Thanks Bucklin12..you are too kind! I guess I should never use the word never but "generally" I think that is the case. What I see, is these college coaches tend to move around like thunderstorms. They get paid so little money (the assistants) they never seem to stay at one place long enough. In pro ball, you get a much more consistent message from pitching instructors.

Bottom line is simple - what do you want to do? Play pro ball or play college?
Although many would argue with me, the fact is, you are only 18 years old once in your life. You CAN always go back to college. And... it will be paid for by MLB.

"He's been very open and honest with us," Anderson said. "He tells them they're going to have to meet a certain (signing-bonus figure). He's set his standard very high. If they meet it, he'll sign. If not, he's coming here."

Meanwhile, Nebraska signee Curtis Petersen of Aubrey, Texas, a fourth-round pick of the Marlins, has told the organization it has until July 15 — exactly one month before the singing deadline — to make a final offer. If Petersen doesn't like it, NU pitching coach Eric Newman said, the 6-foot-4 right-hander is headed to college.

"He considers himself part of the Nebraska family," Newman said. "He wants to do right by us and not leave us high and dry. I'm feeling pretty optimistic."

Such loyalty is common for a drafted player with remaining eligibility but rare for a recruit. In the case of Petersen, it's likely explained by his long relationship with Newman, who began recruiting the pitcher as head coach at Dallas Baptist about 1½ years ago.

Newman came to Nebraska last summer. Petersen signed in November before finishing 12-2 with a 1.03 ERA and a Dallas-area high 127 strikeouts as a senior at Ryan High School in Denton, Texas.

No freshman on a baseball scholarship has ever enrolled at Nebraska after being drafted as high as Petersen.

Hopefully he signs and before his deadline.
